The Hubble Space Telescope has helped discover the possible source of the most distant Fast Radio Burst (FRB), a powerful and perhaps the most mysterious radio signal ever recorded.
FRB was first registered a year and a half ago with the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASCAP) radio telescope. Unusual signal strength caused scientists puzzled.
Further observations with Hubble revealed that the source was a group of at least seven galaxies. This unusual discovery could change our understanding of its origin.
The researchers note that the powerful group of galaxies, which originated about five billion years after the Big Bang, may be the result of their merger. Interactions between galaxies can produce bursts of star formation, and that may be the nature of the signal.
